Obion County, Tennessee, Court Minutes
October 1849 – September 1861
Provides a wealth of genealogical information, much of which cannot be found in any other source. During this time frame, Lake County was still a part of Obion County. Among other duties, this court appointed estate administrators and guardians, settled estates when there was no will, cared for county paupers, created new districts and set boundaries, reported election results, and appointed a seemingly endless list of road crews. Insolvent tax lists reflect migrations of Obion County residents to other counties or states. One item of interest was the appointment of each district's Civil War home guard or “minutemen” with their officers. There are also many slaves named, sometimes with their ages and relationships identified.
Some often-occurring surnames: Abington, Applegate, Bird, Boyett, Buchanan, Cage, Caldwell, Callicott, Caudle, Clack, Cloar, Corum, Crockett, Edmonds, Exum, Garrison, Glisson, Guy, Harper, Hogue, Hord, Hutchinson, Jenne, Landrum, Marr, Meacham, Moffatt, Moultrie, Norrid, Parker, Pickard, Reeves, Robinson, Sinkler, Tanner, Wagster, Whiteside.
