Did you have ancestors living in West Tennessee in the early 1800's with a Baptist heritage? We may have something special for you! After years of work, we are proud to announce our newest book, which will be available in early 2018. The book will take an inside look at many Baptist Churches in what was the wilderness and Indian lands of West Tennessee. The Big Hatchie Association served the area west of the Tennessee River to the Mississippi River. The Association was organized about 1828 in Madison County, Tennessee. In the 1830 meeting records, approximately 28 churches were represented: Fayette County - four; Hardeman County - eight; Haywood County - three; Madison County - three; McNairy County - four; Shelby County - four; and Tipton County - two. Many of the pioneers heading west were strong Baptist families from the Carolinas and other eastern states. The preachers in their midst were eloquent in sermon and well-trained, ready to start churches. These steadfast people lived during a time that seems long ago, when Davy Crockett was their Congressman and Sam Houston was Governor. Today, in the same area, there are about twelve Baptist Associations, as well as Union University, in Jackson, Tennessee, all existing because of the leadership skill and vision our ancestors had in 1828 with the organization of the Big Hatchie Baptist Association.

Early West Tennessee Baptist Associations, Minutes and Notes, 1830-1903, consists of the information submitted by the West Tennessee Baptist Churches each year from 1830-1891 to the Big Hatchie Baptist Association and from 1891-1903 to the Memphis Baptist Association. These associations held annual meetings, and this book provides the names of messengers (attendees) at the meetings, plus names of ministers, and in most instances, the number of members each church had. Later records consist of the names of church clerks and Sunday School Superintendents, as well as the value of church property. For some years, there are obituaries of church officers who died in those years, giving quite a lot of genealogical information for those persons. The book is 289 pages and is indexed.
